Sometimes referred to as the “most beautiful Volkswagen ever,” the Karmann Ghia’s body is a triumph of the automotive stylist’s art, because underneath its sexy curves is nothing more exotic than a widened floor-pan and running gear from the humble Beetle.

By the mid-1950s, the German economy was recovering. Mercedes-Benz developed the 300SL Gullwing, and Porsche had a hit in America with the 356 Speedster. Volkswagen looked for a way to move upmarket.

The ‘Beetle in a sports coat’ – as it has been dubbed – was initially an unofficial Volkswagen. The idea for a sexier Beetle, and what would become Volkswagen’s second model line, came from long-time VW coachbuilder Wilhelm Karmann. In early 1953 he contracted Luigi Segre of Italian styling house Carrozzeria Ghia, to design a sporty body to fit the Beetle chassis. The original idea was for a convertible but Ghia drew a coupe.

The prototype was finished by October ’53 and shown to a delighted Karmann who then presented it to a, no doubt, surprised Volkswagen managing director Heinrich Nordhoff in a back room at the Paris Auto Salon. The normally conservative Nordhoff nevertheless gave it the green light and the Type 14 Karmann-Ghia went into production in 1955.

The Karmann Ghia is pretty enough to capture anyone’s attention — and its reliability and aftermarket support are only icing on a gorgeous, velvety cake. It’s a heavenly combination.

Meet the Golf R32 — the R being for race technology, the 32 in honour of the 3. 2-litre V6 the engineers have cleverly hidden in the TARDIS-like engine bay.

The humble Golf has come a long way in its 51 years. It has grown in every dimension, and it’s the same story with the performance. Back in 1977 the original hot Golf, the much celebrated mk1 GTI, was armed with a measly 110bhp 1. 6-litre motor and used (and needed, for that matter) only the front wheels to transfer that power to the road.

Skip forward 30 yrs and the premium Golf is no longer marked out by the letters ‘GTI’. It’s now the R32 that tops the range, and it has moved the game on considerably, with an additional 140bhp and four-wheel drive.

The R32 is one of those cars that you don’t get until you drive it. Even passengers respond instinctively: Every person I drove with would settle into the body-hugging seats, hear the engine’s rich growl and register the sharp handling before blurting out some version of, “Wow, this is really a great car.”

Standing in front of this Alfa Romeo is a rather thought-provoking experience. OK, so it’s not traditionally pretty, but the longer you spend with its bread van design, the more it grows on you. It’s best viewed in profile where, despite a number of overly fussy creases and swages, it looks most resolved.

Pop the door, and you encounter an interior superior to anything else in this group. The seats and door trims are clad in hand-stitched leather, with the former embossed with the company’s logo, and provide a quite exquisite contrast to the exterior. There are other satisfying design touches, such as the glove compartment that scallops in, according the passenger more space.

Despite its size it shifts with quick snicks. Yet, it’s the Twin-Spark 2.0-litre engine – which came from the 155 saloon – that’s vaulted immediately to the fore as the star. If you’ve never experienced a good Italian four-pot, then you’ve missed out on the ability of that country’s motoring engineers to make them sing.

The 145 Cloverleaf is great to drive, handling is sharp, and steering was excellent.

According to the DVLA Database, there are less than 100 145 Cloverleafs left in the country !!
