Modern motorbikes are far faster and more powerful than their equivalents from the Seventies – but not if you’re 17 years old and just getting into biking. Back in 1978, speed-crazed teenagers were excitedly taking to the road on Suzuki’s latest learner-bike – advertised as “the new ‘Ton-up’ GT250 X7”.
Suzuki’s headline was just about accurate, too. Motor Cycle News speed-trapped the X7 at 99.34mph, and a tester from Motorcycle Mechanics magazine recorded a timed top speed of 100.5mph at Chobham test track in Surrey, albeit after removing its mirrors to squeeze out the last em-pee-aitch.
And that was with an otherwise standard X7, too. With its carburettors tweaked and its standard pipes swapped for screaming expansion chambers, the little two-stroke twin was good for over 115mph. Learner riders had never had it so good.

BSA, or the Birmingham Small Arms Company, was first created in 1854 by 14 Birmingham gunsmiths; it became a public limited company in 1861, but it was in 1878 that it began making cycle components. While other manufacturers were already using BSA parts, it wasn’t until 1905 that the first prototype motorcycle was built, though it didn’t get unveiled until 1910.
The A7 was BSA’s big push into the parallel twin market. Soon a sports version of the A7 appeared, with twin carburetors called the Star Twin, it was three of these models that won the coveted Maudes Trophy for BSA when they covered a total of 4,958 miles in an ACU-controlled test during 1952.

DKW (Dampf-Kraft-Wagen, English: steam-driven car) is a German car and motorcycle marque.The company and brand is one of the ancestor companies of the modern day Audi company which was one of the four companies that formed Auto-Union.
In 1916, Danish engineerJorgen Skafte Rasmussen founded a factory in Zschopau Saxony Germany, to produce steam fittings.
That year he attempted to produce a steam-driven car, called the DKW.Although unsuccessful, he made a two-stroke toy engine in 1919, called “Des Knaben Wunsch “– “the boy’s wish”.
He put a slightly modified version of this engine into a motorcycle and called it “Das Kleine Wunder “– “the little wonder” the initials from this becoming the DKW brand.
By the late 1920s, DKW was the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer.
The DKW RT 175 was one of the company‘s most successful post-war motorcycles.
It was a new design that reached the market in 1954 and satisfied demand in the popular 175 cc class.
The engine, rated at just under 10 horsepower, was notable for its excellent torque characteristic, and the four-speed gearbox helped the rider to make even better use of the available torque.
